Berlin
City secrets: a hidden courtyard
In Berlin it pays to keep your eyes peeled: peep through doorways; explore hidden courtyards.
This secret enclave of beautiful 19th century villas is tucked away behind a nondescript apartment block in what must surely count as one of Berlin's least prepossessing streets.
Lined with mundane storefronts, the upper section of Genthiner Strasse looks fairly bleak even on warm summer days.
Turn into this tiny courtyard, however, and you'll be greeted by the sight of rare, neoclassical townhouses and a pretty garden complete with ivy-covered trees.
City of contrasts? Berlin's secrets really do surprise.
